Native Title Researcher Applicants
Native Title Researcher Applicants request access to DIA-managed records for the purpose of gathering evidence relevant to a native title claim.
Records for this applicant group are accessed under DIA’s Native Title Access Policy (NTAP).
The NTAP places conditions on the use of records copied for native title purposes, such as their return to DIA at the end of the litigation process, strict confidentiality and adherence to protocol associated with cultural material.
Records accessible to Native Title Researcher Applicants are listed on the NTAP. AHRU Research Officers retrieve the requested records for the applicant body and the Native Title Researcher appointed by the applicant body then copies the records at the DIA office. State archived files are copied at the State Records Office after approval for access has been given by DIA.
Eligible Native Title Researcher Applicants are:
- The State of Western Australia through the Office of Native Title and the State Solicitor’s Office;
- The legal representative of a native title claim registered with the National Native Title Tribunal;
- Individuals representing a registered native title claim; and
- The National Native Title Tribunal.
All records applied for must be relevant to the native title claim named on the application form.
Please note that appointments to copy approved records must be made with AHRU.
