Traditional owners unite in aquaculture

The West Australian has reported that Aboriginal groups are involved in ambitious plans for a Kimberley aquaculture hub.

After the Liberal-National Government created the Kimberley Aquaculture Development Zone at Cone Bay, north-east of Broome, three separate traditional owner groups with titles over the area have agreed to consolidate their interests.

The Mayala, Dambimangari and Bardi Jawi communities will form a joint venture with the project’s lead partner, John Hutton’s Maxima Opportunity Group.

The project is believed to be seeking investors as part of plans to secure a licence to farm up to 15,000 tonnes of fish a year.
